Pate LIVE! Book Club: American Gods

It’s been a while since we’ve had a Book Club posting. I have recently received a swatch of new books over the holidays, so we’ll see if we can keep these posts coming on a regular basis.

The first book for the club this year is Neil Gaiman’s American Gods. This is my 2nd foray into Gaiman’s works, and picked this title because I have heard good things about it. Unfortunately, I don’t know what it is about, so I look forward to finding out.

Pate LIVE! Book Club: Night Watch (Nochnoi Dozor)

This entry of the Pate LIVE! Book Club comes from Sergei Lukyanenko. “The Night Watch” is the first of his epic trilogy between good and evil. It follows the stories of the Others, serving the Light (good) or Dark (evil), who are supernaturally gifted beings.

I first learned of this story through some friends of mine when we went to watch the “Night Watch” movie in theaters. This Russian story unfolded at breakneck speeds providing a thrilling experience to watch. It prompted me to find the books so I could get the full story behind the movie.

I’m anxious to get into this book to see if it enthralls me as much as the movie did.

The Children of Hurin

On Tuesday, April 18th, 2007, “The Children of Hurin” by J.R.R. Tolkien was released. This is a new complete work from the late author. I’ve not gotten my hands on it yet, but the book is on it’s way to my door today.

This promises to be a very good read, if a little darker than the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I’d encourage any fan of Tolkien to check this book out.

Pate LIVE! Book Club – Everfree

Well, if any of you picked up the last book in the Pate LIVE! Book Club, I hoped you enjoyed it as much as me. This time, the book club is picking up the final installment of Nick Sagan’s Idlewild trilogy: Everfree.

So go pick up the book and read along with the club. If you haven’t read them yet, I recommend picking up Idlewild and Edenborn before you read this book. The series has been fantastic, and promises to wrap up with a satisfying ending.

What I’m Reading Now

I’m going to attempt to start alerting readers to which books I am currently reading, as I’ve become an avid reader over the past few months. As time permits, I’ll post the past few books I’ve read, along with my thoughts.

Last night, I picked up a book by Terry Brooks entitled “Magic Kingdom For Sale: SOLD!” I read this book in my younger days and remember enjoying it. Let’s hope I still enjoy it now.

Flatland: The Movie

Harry Potter Book VII Title Revealed

It’s finally been revealed. The title to one of the most highly anticipated books has been set. News from across the pond is that J.K. Rowling has released the title to the seventh and final Harry Potter book.

“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”

So there we have it… the rumors can be fueled with what this means for the teenage wonderboy.

Will he perish? Will he defeat Voldemort? What will become of Ron and Hermione? With the giants return? What of Dumbledore? What (or who) is the seventh horcrux? What about Aunt Petunia and the rest of Clan Dursley? Will Nevelle Longbottom become a hero? And who will become the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher for the final book, provided Hogwarts remains open?

I have my suspicions of his fate, but I’ll find out like the rest of you.

National Novel Writer’s Month

National Novel Writer’s Month

Here’s a novel idea (no pun intended). An organized event to encourage people to write a novel during November. A short novel. 50,000 words to be exact… well, more of a threshold.

Anyway, for the entire month of November, people are being challenged to produce a short novel or at least 50,000 words, or approximately 175 pages. This is a tough but doable challenge. However, they don’t expect quality, just quantity. So if you participate, expect to write some fluff… probably bad fluff… but it could be interesting fluff. Think about this mantra: “No Plot? No Problem!”.

I discovered this site this morning through the wonderful LifeHacker blog. It’s a shame I only have 2 days to think out what I am going to attempt to write. I think I will do this though, to see what I can produce. Who knows, I may even keep tabs of my progress here on the blog.

As a second thought, anybody out there interested in going in with me to co-author a novel? Post a comment and let me know…
