Biomimicry – Products that mimic nature

This interesting article at money.cnn.com promotes various products whose inspiration is Mother Nature herself and natural phenomena that scientists are working to duplicate. Biomimicry could lead to a brand new generation of products and inventions allowing people to gain benefit from natural designs.

Product design by Mother Nature – June 1, 2007

Natural designs, honed through millions of years of evolution, tend to be surprisingly efficient. Products built along those lines could replace the detritus of the first industrial age with cleaner, more elegant, and much more sustainable substitutes.

“Biomimicry has become a methodology for finding answers to engineering or design questions,” says Janine Benyus, who wrote one of the first books on the subject and now consults with companies looking to profit from biomimics. “You take an engineering problem like how to lubricate or adhere to something, and you find examples of how nature has solved that problem. If you look carefully, you can always find technologies shaped by natural selection that hold the answers.”

Creating an application using Amazon Web Service

I’ve just discovered a cool tutorial over at Coding4Fun. The show you how to implement the Amazon Web Service in a C# application allowing you to search for books and such via your application. This could be extremely useful in developing your own web application/site when attempting to integrate with larger companies.

Give it a shot…

Coding4Fun : Using the Amazon Web Service

The 3.0 release includes a downloadable software development kit. Before getting started on the application, I installed the SDK on my computer. The SDK provides all the information you need on using Amazon Web services to add content to Web sites, enable transactions, and upload products to Amazon.com. I don’t need to add content to my Web site or use the more advanced features of the Amazon Web services. Not yet, anyway. I usually have modest objectives when I begin working with unfamiliar technology. A desktop application that uses one of the Web methods provided by the Amazon Web service is a good starting point. Once I get familiar with the Amazon Web services I can look forward to tackling more ambitious projects later on.

Happy Coding!

Great Moments in Alabama Politics

Here is another great moment in Alabama politics. A Republican Senator decked a Democratic Senator “upside the head” after the Democratic Senator called the other gentleman’s mother a “bitch.”

The 69-year-old Bishop said he punched Barron, 65, in the head after the senator called him a “son of a bitch.” “I responded to his comment with my right hand,” Bishop said.

Apparently, the rest of the Senate stood around chanting “Fight! Fight! Fight!”.

NASA: Atlantis is ready to launch – CNN.com

After a three-month delay, NASA entered the final day of a launch countdown for space shuttle Atlantis Thursday with no major technical problems looming and a forecast for promising weather.
