What I’m Reading Now

I’m going to attempt to start alerting readers to which books I am currently reading, as I’ve become an avid reader over the past few months. As time permits, I’ll post the past few books I’ve read, along with my thoughts.

Last night, I picked up a book by Terry Brooks entitled “Magic Kingdom For Sale: SOLD!” I read this book in my younger days and remember enjoying it. Let’s hope I still enjoy it now.

If you want to join the Pate LIVE! Book Club, pick up a copy of the book and read along. When you are done, post your thoughts on the books here.

How to tell you are watching a bad Nicholas Cage movie

If you ever found yourself wondering if you’d like the next Nicholas Cage movie hitting the theaters, here’s a handy guide over at TheJay.com that will help you make your decision.

Some of my favorites include:

  • If Nic’s hair is longer than four inches, you are watching a bad Nicolas Cage movie.
  • If his role requires him to have any muscle tone, for whatever reason, press stop on the DVD player and go watch some Family Guy reruns, because you’re watching a shitty Nicolas Cage movie.

The Birth of MP3

BusinessWeek.com has an interesting article describing how the MP3 format was born and the different people that helped it come to be. And who’d have thought that Suzanne Vega’s “Tom’s Diner” would become a major determining factor in the technology’s success?

What happens when you drink a Coke?

The folks over at FrostFirePulse.com have detailed the answer to this question. My only remaining question is why does a ice-cold glass of Coke taste so darn tasty after a hard day’s worth of yard work???

32 Things You Can Do With Beer

Yet another posting on beer… seems I am finding more interesting articles these days to pass along to you.

MSN Lifestyle presents us with 32 things you can do with beer (other than the favorite: Drinking It). My favorite from the list is (because of the sheer oddity of it): 6. SHAMPOO HAIR.

From the article:

Not only is beer the remedy for a dull party, it’s also the cure for dull hair. Dump a cup into a small saucepan and bring it to a boil over medium heat. Let it reduce until there’s 1/4 cup left. This removes the alcohol, which can dry hair. Let the beer cool, then mix it with a cup of your favorite shampoo. Pour it into an empty shampoo bottle, then wash and rinse as usual. It’ll give your hair more shine and luster.

Photography Basics

Are you interested in photography as a hobby? Perhaps you’ve gotten a nice camera with fancy gadgets and you don’t know the first thing about how to use it. Maybe you’ve even dabbled in the fine art of “pointing the camera at something and clicking the button.”

If you like photography, but are like me and don’t know the first thing about aperture, focal lengths, and other mysterious “photog” terms, then you may be interested in this article. It contains some plain English descriptions of important concepts in the photography world.

I hope this helps you as much as it has helped me.

What is Vodka Anyway?

Besides being a mixer of choice to many a drinker around the world, many people apparently don’t know what makes Vodka Vodka. I thought I knew… Vodka was distilled from fermented potatoes or grains. Okay, that’s all well and good, but did you know that it could also come from grapes or molasses? Interesting… (more…)

Alabama Beer Fans Rejoice!

For those of you supporting Free The Hops, you can rejoice in knowing that we are one step closer to setting them free. The
Alabama House Travel and Tourism Committee has passed a bill allowing for the sale of “gourmet” beers in Alabama along to the Alabama House.

The bill would raise alcohol limits from 6% to over double that amount, 14.9%. Also, it would remove the 16oz container restriction currently in place.

Let’s hear it for Alabama getting with the program along with 46 other states of the union.
